In the current democratic setup, there are two possible types of governing styles – presidential – having a directly-elected President or a parliamentary – having parliament with the ruling party (alone or in  coalition) which internally elects a leader who in turn takes over as the prime minister.

Since this indirectly-elected prime minster draws power from being member of the ruling party, which in turns dependent of a majority in parliament, there is concern that a prime minister is too compromised to take strong/decisive action.

This kind of concern exists in countries like India, where dog-eat-dog world of politics combined with jealousy over extra-ordinary growth of non-democratic China has bubbled up this issue recently. In this blog we will look at the unintended consequences for a country like India to adopting a U.S-style presidential form of government.
